Sikorsky has developed rapid reconfiguration kits for Black Hawk helicopters, allowing troops to completely change the aircraft’s role in up to three hours.

According to Defence Blog, the kits turn the Black Hawk into a multifunctional platform capable of performing assault helicopter missions, close air support, precision strike, medical evacuation, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), and tactical lift missions using a single airframe.

The announcement positions the Armed Black Hawk kits as both a force-structure solution and a weapons upgrade, enabling operators to consolidate what would otherwise require multiple specialized helicopter types into a single combat-proven platform.

With this innovation, ground units can swap the kits themselves, keeping aircraft available and mission-ready without having to remove helicopters from service for long modification periods.

Three hours to transform an assault helicopter into a close air support platform can prove critical in fast-moving tactical situations, where mission requirements may change faster than traditional aviation scheduling allows.

In this way, a commander whose helicopters are configured for troop insertion at dawn may discover by mid-morning that the priority has shifted to fire support or casualty evacuation, making it possible to switch kits to match the mission.

“The new Armed Black Hawk kits give warfighters an aircraft that can do it all: a single, versatile, combat-proven platform where ground units can rapidly swap commercially produced kits while maintaining high mission readiness,” said Rich Benton, vice president and general manager of Sikorsky.

“Delivering these upgraded kits is another example of our commitment to providing 21st Century Security solutions that deliver unmatched performance, lifecycle cost savings, and give soldiers the reliable and interoperable capability they need to win today and tomorrow.”
